Types of Popular Music (Sept 20, 2005)

In the 80's "white" and "black" music were clearly separate. As politically-incorrect terms became less accepted, and the line between "white" and "black" music was broadened, the different types of popular music were seperated into larger categories: Urban, Pop, and Rock.

Urban Music
Urban is the only type of music that never relies on previous styles of music. In other words, it always moves forward, is constantly changing, and never repeats itself. Basically, this is new music that isn't based on previous trends. Synthesized drums play a part. Vocal ability is one of the main keys to urban music. If not vocal ability, then some sort of actual talent is needed, whether it be the gift to write good lyrics, or the ability to dance. Examples of urban music are R&B, Hip Hop, Rap, and some types of Dance Hall and Reggaeton.

Pop Music
Pop music is influenced by previous trends. Guitars and drums are the main instruments here. Pop music, unlike urban, does not really require any particular talent. Pop music always repeats itself.

Rock Music
Pure rock is a style that doesn't change very much. Heavy guitars, real drums, and loud singing are typical characterisitcs of rock.

Other types of music
Country/Western, Jazz, and Classical.
